Hero Name Generator Based on Powers

Select one power or combine several, and the generator mixes their vocabularies into names that describe what your ability actually does to a room.

Power vocabulary cheat sheet

Every power has a surface word and a set of better words underneath it. Fire: ember, pyre, cinder, forge, scorch, wildfire, smoulder. Ice: rime, glacier, whiteout, frostline, hoarfrost. Lightning: arclight, surge, voltage, thunderhead, flashpoint. Wind and storm: squall, monsoon, windshear, tempest. Earth: bedrock, fault line, quarry, landslide, standing stone. Water: undertow, maelstrom, riptide, delta, wellspring.

Non-elemental powers work the same way. Strength: hammerfall, atlas, juggernaut. Speed: afterimage, slipstream, tempo. Telepathy: mindveil, reverie, whisperline. Invisibility: blindspot, nowhere, vanish line. Gravity: singularity, downpull, event horizon. Time: hourglass, aftermath, paradox.

The rule underneath all of it: name the consequence, not the mechanic. A hero who freezes a battlefield is Whiteout. A hero who has ice powers is Ice Man, and there is already one of those.

Naming hybrid and multi-power heroes

Characters with two powers are where most generators fall apart, because they simply pick one list. Selecting several powers here blends both lexicons, so a fire and gravity character can land on Molten Singularity or Collapsing Pyre instead of a compromise.

For three or more powers, do not try to encode them all. Name the one the character is feared for and let the others be a surprise in the story. A name is a headline, not a stat block.

Frequently asked questions

How do you name a superhero based on their powers?

Break the power into source and effect, then name the effect using a concrete noun — Whiteout instead of Ice Man, Arclight instead of Electric Boy. Add a role word if you want the name to state the character's job as well.

What are good elemental hero names?

Kindler, Rime, Arclight, Fault Line, Undertow, Windshear, Emberwright, Frostline, Thunderhead and Wellspring all read as elemental without being taken.

Can I combine two powers in one name?

Yes. Select multiple powers and the generator mixes both vocabularies, producing hybrid names such as Molten Singularity or Glacial Arclight.
